Contact Lenses- Different Types

Contact Lenses

Contact lens is a cosmetic, corrective or therapeutic lens which is generally placed on the cornea of the eye. Although the purpose of contact lenses is the same as that of conventional glasses, contact lenses far outweigh glasses in terms of benefits or advantages. They are invisible, lightweight and also are more useful in wet weather conditions. Also contact lenses provide a wider field of vision.

Contact lenses have come a far way since their inception. Now contact lenses come not only to correct vision but also to improve the looks. That too, according to the choice and preference of the customers. A wide variety of them are available in the form of hard contacts, soft contacts, bifocal contacts, disposable contacts, toric contacts, gas permeable contacts, extended wear contact lens, daily wear contact lens and many more.

Let's discuss some of the most popular types of lenses available for use presently.

The first are the soft contacts or soft contact lenses. They are made from a flexible and soft type of plastic which helps in the passage of oxygen to the cornea of the eye. Soft contact lens is easier to wear and adjust well to the eyes. They are most comfortable to wear contacts indeed.

The most recent type of soft lens is made of silicone hydrogels which allow even more oxygen to pass to the cornea of the eye when you are wearing the lenses.

After this, rigid gas permeable contacts are widely in demand. These types of contact lenses are considered to be more resistant and durable. They are also capable of giving a much clearer and crisper vision. They are less expensive in the sense that they last for longer duration than the soft contact lenses.

The rigid gas permeable contacts in the initial stages can be quite uncomfortable to wear but with time one can eventually get used to of these. Some people however can take weeks' time to get adjusted to these.

Extended wear contact lens are a type of soft contact lenses with a maximum period or one or two months. They are made of the same material that is used in soft contact lenses. The specialty of this type of contact lenses is that you can wear them for a longer duration of time without washing them with a solution. But before using this type of lenses you must remember that your eyes need at least some rest. So you should first consult your doctor whether your eyes can tolerate this type of extended wear contact lenses and only then use them.

The next type of contact lenses is the disposable contacts. True to its name these types of lenses are used only for one day and can be discarded. The next day you start again with a fresh pair of lenses.
